UK legal entities may need a Legal Entity Identifier when entering certain reportable financial transactions, including transactions covered by UK MiFIR or UK EMIR. Where an LEI is required, an investment firm may be unable to execute the transaction or satisfy its reporting obligations without one.

Founded in 2018, LEI Register is an Estonia-based Registration Agent offering UK-focused LEI registration, renewal and transfer services. Its website is matched with Companies House and works with two GLEIF-accredited issuers to process applications.

What Is LEI Register?

An LEI is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code used to identify a legal entity involved in financial transactions. It follows the ISO 17442 standard and remains permanently assigned to the same entity.

LEIs are formally issued and maintained by organisations known as Local Operating Units, or LOUs, accredited by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation. LEI Register operates as a Registration Agent, helping customers prepare and submit applications to its issuing partners.

This distinction is important. LEI Register does not issue the code itself. Instead, it collects the required information, assists with validation and sends the application to an accredited issuer. This can give applicants a simpler route into the Global LEI System without needing to deal directly with an LOU.

How LEI Register Works

LEI Register’s application process is designed to reduce manual data entry. Applicants start by entering the legal entity’s name or company number. For Companies House-registered entities, the form can automatically populate relevant company information, which the applicant then reviews and confirms.

The application is submitted with payment and any supporting documents required. Additional documentation may be needed for trusts, pension schemes, entities without publicly available registry data or applications submitted by someone who is not an authorised representative.

LEI Register says a new LEI is usually issued within 24 hours. Straightforward applications from Companies House-registered entities without additional parent-company reporting requirements may be completed within one to three hours. An optional fast-track service guarantees eligible applications within three hours.

The website also advertises same-day issuance for eligible applications submitted before 5 p.m. on a working day. Processing can take longer when documents, ownership details or applicant authorisation need additional verification.

The Issuer Relationship

LEI Register is an official Registration Agent for two GLEIF-accredited issuers: Ubisecure RapidLEI and Nasdaq CSD. Its application terms state that it selects the LOU it considers the best solution for each order and informs the customer after payment.

This provides access to two recognised issuing organisations without requiring the applicant to choose between them independently. However, it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every order will be completed faster than an application submitted through a single-issuer agent.

The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation maintains information about accredited LEI issuers and the wider Global LEI System. Businesses can use its public resources to verify an issuer or check an existing LEI record.

Renewals and Switching

An LEI does not expire or disappear after one year. It remains permanently assigned to the same legal entity. However, its reference data generally needs to be renewed annually to maintain an active registration status. If it is not renewed, its status becomes lapsed.

A lapsed LEI may create problems where current entity data is required for a regulated transaction, report or onboarding process. The exact consequences depend on the applicable rules and the requirements of the financial institution involved.

LEI Register offers one-, three- and five-year plans. Under a multiyear plan, it reviews the entity’s information and handles the annual renewal during the purchased period. At the time of writing, a five-year new-registration plan costs £40 per year, or £200 in total. The five-year renewal plan costs £43 per year, or £215 in total. Prices should be checked before ordering because they may change.

For a business that needs to stay compliant and does not want to manage annual renewal dates manually, a multiyear plan may reduce recurring administrative work.

Existing LEIs can also be transferred to LEI Register without a transfer fee. The identifier remains unchanged because it belongs to the legal entity rather than the service provider. A transfer alone does not renew the LEI, however, and the process may take up to seven days.

Trust Signals

At the time of writing, LEI Register holds an Excellent rating of 4.7 out of 5 on Trustpilot. Its website also identifies the service as an official Registration Agent working with Ubisecure RapidLEI and Nasdaq CSD.

The company was established in 2018 and is legally registered in Estonia, although it operates a dedicated UK website and application process for British entities. Calling it a UK-focused provider is therefore more accurate than describing it as a UK-founded business.

Companies considering wider operational safeguards may also find this guide to building a more resilient business useful. Automating recurring administrative work, maintaining accurate records and planning for deadlines can all reduce avoidable disruption.

Where It Falls Short

No LEI service is the right fit for every organisation, and LEI Register has some limitations worth considering.

  • It is a specialised service. LEI Register focuses on LEI registration, renewal, transfer and related management. Businesses that need company formation, VAT registration or broader regulatory filing support will require another provider.
  • The lowest annual price requires a longer commitment. The advertised £40 annual rate applies to a five-year new-registration plan paid as a £200 total. Organisations uncertain about their long-term need for an LEI may prefer a shorter plan despite the higher annual cost.
  • Same-day issuance is conditional. Straightforward applications may be processed quickly, but additional ownership reporting, supporting documents or authorisation checks can extend the turnaround time.
  • Transfers can take several days. Although transferring an LEI is free, the process may take up to seven days. Organisations approaching a renewal or transaction deadline should avoid leaving a transfer until the last moment.
  • A multiyear plan does not create a five-year LEI status immediately. The underlying record is still reviewed and renewed annually. The plan means LEI Register manages those renewals during the purchased period.

Who Is LEI Register Best For?

LEI Register may suit UK legal entities that need an LEI for transactions or reports covered by UK financial regulations. It is particularly relevant to businesses seeking a streamlined Companies House-linked application and those that want annual renewals handled through a multiyear plan.

It may also appeal to entities transferring from another provider. Transfers are free, and the LEI remains unchanged, although customers should allow enough time for the transfer to be completed.

The service is less suitable for businesses seeking a single provider for wider company formation or compliance work. Organisations with very large LEI portfolios may also want to compare its LEIAdmin tools and volume pricing with other enterprise management platforms before deciding.

The Verdict

LEI Register offers a straightforward route to applying for, renewing and transferring an LEI through two GLEIF-accredited issuing partners. Its Companies House-linked application, multiyear renewal plans and free transfer process address the main administrative tasks involved in maintaining an LEI.

The service does not issue LEIs directly, and same-day processing is not guaranteed for every application. Nevertheless, it is a practical option for UK entities that want Registration Agent support and prefer not to manage annual renewal dates themselves.

Businesses expecting to need an LEI for several years may benefit most from the multiyear plans. Those with a short-term or uncertain requirement should compare the single-year price and service terms before making a longer commitment.
